Hijab is an Arabic word meaning “to cover”. The word hijab is typically used for Muslim women to veil or hide their body parts by using certain clothing. In many Islamic countries, hijab refers to the covering of a woman’s head and face. Islam requires Muslim women to cover themselves in front of men who are not close relatives to them. This is to ensure that they do not create a sexual attraction towards them. This coving of the body of Muslim women is practiced differently in different Islamic countries across the globe. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for example, the term abaya is used for the covering of woman’s body. Abaya is a lose robe worn by the Muslim women over their dress and hides the stature of the women’s body. Niqab is also used by the Muslim women to cover their face. The Malaysian version of Hijab is known as Tudung and is a piece of cloth worn over head by the Muslim women. It is a one-piece cotton hijab which is used to cover the head and ears of the Muslim women and comes with a lace. Then there is a two-piece cotton hijab which is used to cover both the head and the neck of Muslim women. The use of two-piece cotton hijab is not common in Malaysia but is a popular choice among the Muslim women in Pakistan. The one-piece cotton hijab is the modest version of Islamic clothing for women and is practiced in more moderate Muslim societies like Turkish and Malaysian ones. Though hijab is available in different materials, the cotton-made ones are most popular and comfortable in use. Whereas the use of hijab is quite common in the Muslim countries, the Muslim community in certain non-Muslim countries faces difficulties in using hijab as part of their clothing. We take the example of France where the government has banned the use of scarf and hijab by the Muslim female students in their college premises. This harsh approach by the government of France prevents Muslim women to exercise the Islamic culture. Jack Straw, the former foreign secretary of UK asked the Muslim women of UK to uncover their faces which resulted in a chaos among the Muslim community of the UK. Protests were registered by the Muslims and the government cleared the fact that there is no such liability imposed by it and Muslim women are free to wear scarf and hijab. Muslim societies in many other non-Muslim countries have not restrictions in this regard and can follow their culture without facing any difficulty.
